- India’s first-ever “Balika Panchayat” came up in Kutch, Gujarat
- It was launched in four districts namely Kunaria, Maska, Motagua, and Vadsar villages of Kutch
- Aim – To promote Social & Political participation of girls
- It is initiative under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign
- The Panchayat will include girls from age 10 - 21 and their participation in panchayat will help to promote women led development instead of women development
- The move will help fight social issue like child girl marriage, dowry system and poor education of girls in schools
- 20-year-old Urmi Ahir, named the sarpanch of the Balika Panchayat
